Project Overview:
Hakanson Anderson worked hard to design this nearly 1-mile-long frontage road for the City of East Bethel. The City wanted to complete this major frontage road to connect Viking Boulevard to 181st Avenue NE on the east side of Highway 65. In addition, it will be the main access road for several developments in the future, including a Kwik Trip. This gives the City more opportunities to create housing in an area that is currently not being used.
The project was first brought to us in early 2020. We began preliminary work which mainly consisted of the placement of the road. Several layouts were created so we could avoid as much wetland impact as we could. Once the layout was finalized, we started the design process in the spring. Designing all aspects for this frontage road took a lot of time and effort, and we were able to finish in the winter of 2020. Some of the design challenges we were able to overcome were: determining accurate mucking volumes for the entire road, designing and modeling a round-a-bout, and designing and modeling a very large stormwater management system for the site.
This project is all new construction apart from the bypass lane on Viking Boulevard. Construction includes building up the frontage road and its utilities, major earthwork components, a round-a-bout, and a significantly large storm sewer system that has a total of six storm sewer ponds. The City was able to get nearly $3 million of funding from MnDOT to help fund this project.
